Opening your pool for summer
As the warm weather is approaching, it’s time to think about opening your swimming pool for the season.
The following steps should help you get your swim pool open the right way for the pool season. Please note that all pools are different and the following steps are a guide only, if you are unsure about anything, give us a call and we would be happy to help.
1. The first thing you must do is remove the winter cover, clean it, let it dry, and store for the season.
2. Add water and bringing the pool level up to its normal operating level.
3. You should have cleaned your filter thoroughly when you closed the pool for the winter. If not, you should backwash it now.
4. Start your filtration system, being sure to prime the pump before starting the motor. Be sure to purge all the air from the plumbing and equipment.
Warning: Air will be compressed during this procedure. Be sure to release any built up pressure before opening your filter, pump, or chemical feeder.
5. Check for any leaks and assess the pool itself. Remove any large debris with your leaf net or leaf rake. Any dirt, sand, algae, or other small debris should be vacuumed to waste.
6. It’s time to check the water chemistry. DO NOT begin by throwing a bunch of chlorine or other chemicals into the water. Adding chlorine and other chemicals in certain circumstances can damage and/or stain your pool surface. Test it thoroughly, then add the necessary chemicals in the proper sequence to balance the water chemistry, and allow the water to circulate at least 8-12 hours, so that the chemicals that were added have time to mix with the water in the pool.
7. We suggest getting the pool water tested by a local pool professional for pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, etc. Be sure to follow the procedure they describe to avoid damage to your pool’s surface.
Finally, do not use any household cleaners (especially abrasives) to clean the pool.
